The Upward Bound Project at Eastern Kentucky University provides a multiplicity
of academic support services to high school participants who have exhibited
academic college potential but who might not pursue post-secondary education
due to low family income and little or no history of college experience
in their families. The project’s overall goal is to see
participants successfully complete high school and enter and graduate
from a program of post-secondary education.
Academic and motivational support services include
academic tutoring; seminars in study skills, time management and decision
making; educational field trips; career assessment and academic advisement;
multi-cultural education; enhancement of social and behavioral skills;
and financial stipends. To help participants prepare for standardized
tests (ACT and SAT) and college classes, instruction during both the
academic year and the six week summer residential component is geared
to strengthen skills in the core curriculum areas of English, math,
and science, as well as foreign languages, literature, journalism, computer
science, and speech and drama. In the summer immediately following
high school graduation, bridge participants enroll in college classes
to earn six credit hours.
All graduating participants will be followed for four years or until
successful completion of a post-secondary program of education.
